Diagnosing Historic American Military Medical Innovations

By James Curley
Phi Kappa Phi Forum Summer 2010

The period between the late 19th and early 20th century was marked  by a radical transformation of medicine, especially in biomedicine, technology, specialization and rehabilitation. Wartime medical practice saved lives and served as a training ground and experimental laboratory, substantively influencing military and civilian medicine. New technologies like radiographic imaging saved soldiers in the field. The evolution of others such as prosthetics, coupled with the rise of medical specialization such as orthopedics and plastic surgery, also helped the wounded reclaim their lives and reintegrate into society.

The Grin Reaper

Comedian Bob Zany wrote an article in Phi Kappa Phi Forum Summer 2010 about "dying."  He joked about Oscar the Cat, the therapy pet at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, R.I., who allegedly curls up next to patients right before they pass away. He would add that according to the staffers, this allowed the patient to die with comfort and dignity, unlike the other nursing- home pet, Slobbers the Great Dane.

In another event, a waiter told him and his wife this story. It's about when his best friend was dying. The waiter and his friend spent a lot of time in the hospital watching stand-up comedy on TV and that moments before his friend passed, he saw Bob Zany's act and literally died laughing. Or, at the very least, with a smile on his face.

Human and Animal Blood Groups/Types

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061119231207AAwctJF

Blood groups/types - probably the distinctive factor why humans are different from animals (mammals) even if some of their features (physical) are similar. Blood types are inherited from the parents (combination of the parents' blood types).

Blood Type and Diet

I didn't know that blood type is related to diet until today. Now I understand why I should avoid certain foods and why I have allergies. I had my blood typed yesterday (B+) and was curious what it could mean.

Internet Traffic or Defective Broadband Stick?

I had difficulty accessing the Internet starting yesterday afternoon until this early afternoon. It's Friday today so I thought, maybe there are more people who are trying to access the Internet. But then again, I'm also considering the possibility that my broadband stick needs replacement. I've been using it for 10 months now.
